Well, is it?

[Recycled from 13 October 2004]

Is stop-motion animation a form of animation?

How about claymation?

Surely they are. I've never seen anyone to challenge it. But . . .

Is marionette or hand-puppet or silhouette play also animation? It's technology used to create the illusion of life, so I think it is.

Here's another thought: At what point does makeup become puppetry? I suppose that happens when someone standing off-camera works the eyebrows or ears or whatever.

I suppose the Andorian Antenna on Enterprise (or on The Tick's mask) count as
puppetry. I'm not so sure Lamb Chop or Steve Zodiac (or Team America: World
Police) count as animation. Is there a reason why you'd want them to? Why
labels?
Dance is not music (except for tap or that thing with the stomping and the trash
can lids) but music and dance can both be jazz.
If make-up is puppetry, what does that say about beauty contests?

Actually, I think those Andorian antennae were computer-animated, but I may be mistaken about that.

Here's another makeup-related thought: To what extent is the face of Frankenstein's Monster an original work of art created by Jack Post and the property of Universal Studios, and to what extent is it the distinctive likeness of Boris Karloff, and therefore the property of his estate? Universal and Sarah Karloff disagree on this point, and it's an interesting, and interestingly sticky one.
